Mentoring is offered willingly and at the sole discretion of the mentors based upon their interest and availability

Mentoring is accepted at the sole discretion of the mentee

Mentors are prohibited from creating an implicit or explicit quid-pro-quo situation where it can be construed that their mentorship is available only in exchange for some other consideration during the agreed scope of mentoring

Mentees are prohibited from creating an implicit or explicit quid-pro-quo situation where it can be construed that they are asking for funding during the agreed scope of mentoring. However, mentees may at their sole discretion, offer mentors the ability to participate in the success of their ventures in recognition of their mentorship upon completion of the assignment - mentors are prohibited from ever opening this discussion with mentees, either implicitly or explicitly

Mentors will offer advice within the areas of their expertise - they are expected to refer mentees to other mentors with specific expertise when appropriate

Mentors shall not share confidential information obtained from a mentee to anyone else, nor will they use it for business or personal gain, nor will they use it to the detriment of the mentee in any way

Mentors are not expected to sign confidentially agreements

Mentors should disclose any conflicts of interest that they may have to mentees as early as possible, preferably before the scope statement is finalized - for example, if a mentor has an interest in a venture that competes with the mentee's proposed venture, that is a conflict of interest that must be disclosed as early as possible

The general rule of thumb for mentors is that the conduct of their discussions with mentees should be, and should be perceived as being in the interest of helping the mentee be successful - however, mentees will be required to sign a statement declaring that they will hold mentors harmless for their advice
